TA 5% Vat. TORATOSHI (?) Monkeys and Wasps Mid 19th century A Japanese hanging scroll painting, kakejiku , ink and colour on silk, depicting a female Japanese macaque, Nihonzaru , clasping her young among branches of an old pine tree and plucking wasps from a nest hanging above her, signed Toratoshi and sealed Kawasaki and another illegible seal, together with a box. Image 125.5cm x 49.5cm; total 192cm x 64cm (3) Provenance: the Claudio Perino Collection, Turin, acquired mostly in Japan in early 2000s. Exhibited: MAO Museo d'Arte Orientale, Turin, and MUSEC Museo delle Culture, Lugano, 2020 - 2022. Literature: featured in the exhibition catalogue Kakemono, Five centiuries of Japanese painting.
