A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE 'HORSES AND GROOM' PLAQUE BY WANG QI (1884 – 1937)
Republic period, circa 1930
Painted in famille rose enamels with a groom lovingly washing his horses under a willow tree, with three lines of calligraphy and two artist's seals in the top left corner.
36cm x 25cm
Provenance: the Claudio Perino Collection, Turin, acquired in early 2000s.
Wang Qi emerged from the chaos resulting from the fall of the Qing Dynasty as one of the most celebrated porcelain painters. No longer restrained with the stylistic guidelines of the imperial kilns, he developed his own style, specialising in portraits and figures of folk heroes executed in vibrant colours and dynamic brushstrokes.
Together with seven other painters he formed an artistic circle, which the members called the Full Moon Society, later dubbed ‘Eight Friends of Zushan’. Each member was an independent artist in his own wright and their monthly meetings focussed mainly on discussing painting on porcelain.
