A Chinese Scroll Calligraphy by Sun Guoting (1250 x 36cm) Sun Guoting (646-691 AD), also known as Qianli, was born in Fuyang, Hangzhou (now Fuyang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province). He was also known as Chenliu (now Kaifeng City, Henan Province). Tang Dynasty calligrapher and calligraphy theorist.
He wrote two volumes of 'Shupu', which have been lost. The "Preface to Shupu" currently exists, which is divided into six parts: tracing the origins, distinguishing the style of calligraphy, evaluating famous works, describing brushstrokes, admonishing scholars, and injuring intellectuals. It is well thought out, concise and profound in meaning, and occupies an important position in the history of ancient Chinese calligraphy theory. Many of these arguments, such as the three stages of learning books and the five virtues and five combinations in creation, still have significance for future generations. The ink stained book 'Shupu' has been passed down through generations.
