The gilt bronze figure of the Buddha, shown seated in vajrasana with the right hand in the bhumisparsha mudra and the left hand resting palm upward in the lap, a pose associated with enlightenment. The gilt painted serene face displays a calm expression, with elongated earlobes and a prominent urna. The Buddha wears a robe draped over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare, with intricate beaded borders. The hair is rendered in tight curls surmounted by a prominent ushnisha, topped with a delicate finial. The crown and jewelry are inlaid with turquoise. Likely Khasa Malla Kingdom (Circa 14th century), Nepal.
Height: 12 in (30.5 cm) Width: 9 1/8 in (23.2 cm)
Provenance: From a Tibetan-American family collection, San Diego, California.
Extending his right hand forward, this crowned Buddha embodies the pivotal moment of Shakyamuni’s enlightenment and triumph over the demon king Mara at Bodh Gaya in northeastern India. Likely originating from the Khasa Malla Buddhist kingdom, which ruled western Nepal and western Tibet between the 12th and 14th centuries, this figure reflects the region’s distinctive artistic style.
The Khasa Malla artisans skillfully incorporated stylistic influences from neighboring regions, particularly the Late Pala period of northeastern India and the Early Malla period of the Kathmandu Valley. This Buddha’s broad physique, hooked nose, and the rice-grain patterns incised along the prominent beaded hemline of the robe demonstrate a strong affinity with Malla period sculptures.
For similar crowned Buddha sculptures attributed to the Khasa Malla kingdom, see an example sold at Christie’s, New York (19 March 2014, lot 1010), and another sold in Bonham's Paris (June 14, 2022, Lot 33)
