17th century. This Tibetan Phurba, carved from rare ebony wood, is a ritual dagger featuring a three-sided blade. The handle is intricately adorned with a crowned three-headed deity, likely Vajrakilaya, displaying fierce expressions and miniature skulls on the crown, representing protection and the conquest of ignorance. The zitan wood has traces of gilt and red paint pigments.
Height: 15 in (38.1 cm) Width: 3 in (7.6 cm)
Provenance: From a Tibetan-American family collection, San Diego, California.
This exquisite phurba is masterfully carved from ebony, a rare and highly prized material in Tibet. Divided into three distinct sections, the phurba features a pommel intricately carved with the three wrathful faces of Vajrakila, the deity embodying the teachings and practices associated with this sacred ritual implement. For a comparable example, see an ebony phurba in the collection of the Rubin Museum of Art (HAR 65390).
